Fill any holes and cracks and remove old adhesive with a chisel or filling knife.
Replacing old cornice.
First use a small chisel to carefully chip away the edges of the crack resulting in a more even surface and then sand away any lumps so that the area is smooth.
Sand the area so it s smooth.

The original terra cotta cornice on our park slope cooperative has steadily deteriorated.

I have gone up in the ceiling and the cornice thatt i want to replace looks like it is constructed of fine straw like material.
If you re painting.
It s more than 100 years old over the past few years we ve patched the particularly bad spots but we re now at a point where we ll probably have to replace some sections of the cornice and possibly the entire thing.
Using a standard timber saw cut straight in to the cornice face.
You ll get a better finish and it is near impossible to fit new cornices over existing unless increasing by at least 2 3 sizes up.
Insert a thin piece of card something like the reverse of a cereal box would work well and keeping it square in relation to the wall and ceiling.
Original cornice may have become damaged over the years or you may find cracks that have been covered with paint once you ve stripped it back.
Cornices come in standard sizes for the best finish i would recommend removing the old cornice and replacing with new.

The cornice i want to replace is the old style cornice that was used in bathrooms it has a large ventilation gap between it and the plasterboard ceiling.
